Task 4: AS1 - Elton John
To get some practise of editing I used the some Don't go breaking my heart by Elton John, Here is my finished work on youtube below
To edit this Video i used final cut express. For the first stage of this little project i had to first film loads of different shots so i could put them together and make the actual finished short music video as you see it above. I got shots of leila and Larissa by them selves and shots of them together singing to one another. I also got shots of them dancing and put them all together to make a collage and a good sequence
which goes well with the beat and tempo of the song.
For the first part of the editing what i had to do was drag the song towards the timeline and lock it so that it stays put and so it don't get interfered with any of the other clips that I put on there. Here is it below:

Then i had to create a text slide to start off my music video so, the viewer will know what it is that they are looking at. To do this you first have to go to the bottom right hand corner to the button with a 'A' letter on it, you'll have to first click onto that then select text, and another tab will come up, then you'll have to go second to bottom and click onto text again.

Then you will have to go to the top of the screen and click onto controls then you will have the chance to type in what text you want to appear on that slide. Here it is:
Then after this I could get straight onto editing my preliminary task. To do this I had to drag the different slips and put them on the timeline. I done this in the order which best matched the beat. Each time one of the artists on the track sung by themselves for example when Elton John goes solo, thats when i put leila just by her self then Larissa next and when together they would be in on shot together. Here is below are some shots of this.
I used many effects and I also put clips above each other so that instead of my clips moving out of place and the lip synching moving out of place It stays the same. I used the cross fade effect for so that it gives it a bit more style instead of just putting the scenes next to each other jumping straight into one another. Here is an example of what I am explaining.

Task 5: Pre - Production documents
During the Duration of making my Music video, I have to fill out a number of pre production documents. This allows me to understand and be more organised when it comes to actually shooting the video. I have a number of documents that i have to complete, and they are the following:
Risk Assessment - I have to complete a risk assessment so that I know the potential risks whilst filming. It helps me know how I can overcome the risks involved and what i should do to prevent them. It also has emergency contact numbers, of the emergency services, Robert Clack school and also the numbers of the crew members involved with the process of making this music video.
Production Budget
My Production Budget allows me to see how much money I have and what items I need to have in order to film my video, this includes the camera and how much the set will cost. It has a total budget which I need to get to have all the essential items that I need.
Shooting schedule
By having a shooting schedule it allows my crew to know what is required for day that we will be shooting on, for example, the location, props and costumes etc. By having this it will help us to be more organised just by looking at it.
Proposal
The proposal for this project, is a introduction on what I am going to do which is of course a music video. Here it is below:
Contact Details
One of the production sheets is the contact details of the members of the crew, this includes me and the actors. On the this sheet i will have the crew members mobile numbers, so i could get hold of them when i need them and their home number's just incase i cant get in contact with them if one of the two are not working.
Contingency Plan
for this sheet, It asks me what problems there can be and how i can overcome these problems. I highlighted the potential problems that are involved with the entire production of the music video and I gave my answer on to how resolve it. By doing this i can look back at the sheet if i think any problems will occur and i will automatically know what procedures to take if they did occur.
Call Sheet
The call sheet is a plan in which allows my crew to know what they are going to be doing on that particular date, for example how to get to the filming location what types of transport you can get what time and the date of the day that we will be shooting the music video. The actors will also know what type of clothing they will be expected to be wearing on the day and what props they will be using so they can rehearse for the scene. Here is a call sheet that my crew used for the first day of shooting.
Location vist sheet
By having this sheet it allows me and the members of the crew to know where we ill be filming and the location of it, this will also include names of the roads and the areas that we will be shooting and the surrounding environment. This is because it will make it much easier for the crew members to find the location.

Production schedule
A production schedule allows me to narrow down when I will get everything finished on the music video, this involves the programme and the final piece of work that I deliver to the client. It is also like a target sheet, saying when i will get everything completed by, and the date i actually have completed them.
Meeting record
For the meeting record me and Larissa came up with many ideas for the music video that i was going to produce, as the actor Larissa added some very good points that was useful and we moulded it into what the music video is today.
Storyboard
The reason why me and my filming crew met up one day and decided to create a storyboard. By doing this we put our final idea down on to a storyboard so it will make it more clear and easier to look at what scene comes after what and what the scenes will look like. It also gives us the space to come up with some additional notes that we can look at to help us get a better insight into that exact shot.
Here is the complete storyboard in one picture.

- Here is the first scene. In this scene our actors will be walking down a path towards the camera and Larissa will be singing to Emanuel whilst he is ignoring her, and she will be frustrated by this

- Here is the second scene. In this scene the actors will be sitting at a table in a restaurant and she will be singing the lines "we can settle at a table, a table for two" and yet again Emanuel will be ignoring her.
- In this scene as the song goes on they will be getting along, being an ordinary couple visiting the park and sitting in the shade.
- This shot will be of Larissa and it will be amid shot with a white background with her singing to the camera.
- In the song there is a lyric that says "we can raise a chile, wont you raise a child with me" and this shot will be of Larissa pushing a buggy through a busy street.
- When the beat drops in, this shot will contain Larissa dancing to the beat.
- In this shot, they will be arguing with each other, and not being the couple that She wants them to be.
- Like the above shot, they will be back to back ignoring one another as time goes on, things get worse for them as a couple.
- Once again there will be a shot of Larissa singing the lyrics and dancing and it will be quickly edited so it matches the tempo of the song.
- In this scene it will be the couple flirting and getting along well.
_ In this shot, it will have Larissa dancing but it will be her dancing and her outfits will be changing and once again matching the style of the beat behind the song.
- this is the last shot. For this shot it will have the two actors walking away from where they begun in the music video but instead of him ignoring her, he will have his arm around her showing that their relationship is good and how she wants it to be.

Task 4:Task Four – Analyse the track
For this Task I am going to Analyse the track, explain how long the song is and what the meaning behind the lyrics are and what tempo the track goes to and why it is important to have a good beat to match the style and meaning to the words in the song.
Here is the Lyrics to the song below:
I wanna settle down
I wanna settle down
Won't you settle down with me?
Settle down
We can settle at a table
A table for two
Won't you wine and dine with me?
Settle down
I wanna raise a child
I wanna raise a child
Won't you raise a child with me?
Raise a child
We'll call her Nebraska
Nebraska Jones
She'll have your nose
Just so you know
I wanna settle down
I wanna settle down
Won't you settle down with me?
Settle down
Run from Angela Vickers
I saw her with you
Monday morning small talking on the avenue
She's got a fancy car
She wants to take you far
From the city lights and sounds deep into the dark
Star so light and star so bright
First star I see tonight!
Star so light and star so bright
Keep him by side!
I wanna settle down
I wanna settle down
Baby there's no need to run
I'll love you well
I wanna settle down
It's time to bring you down
On just one knee for now
Let's make our vows
Star so light and star so bright
First star I see tonight!
Star so light and star so bright
Keep him by side!
This song was released in 2011 on the 1st of November the single reached Number 37 on the New Zealand singles chart. The Music video to this hit was released online on youtube on the 6th July 2010, and today has over 23 million views alone.
There can be many meanings to this song. Depending on the way the listener hears it. Some think that the message that Kimbra is sending out is that people rush into marriage to quickly and the mannequin in the music video implies that the man does not care who he settles down with but as long as they do.
Kimbra in this Music video seems a little wild, not the typical , classy female represented by the young females in the music video. In the video it is implying that she's never going to be cool and calm, settling down and having children, and that she just really wants to live, and don't care what people think. Also in the music video there are a lot of fake dolls, and by this she is probably telling us how ridiculous it is to hold onto something which is not even real.
It could also mean that you should hold onto what you've got when you have it, and only when you loose it, thats when you realise what you had. In one scene of the music video, pictured above you can see the couple together in the room, but when the man leaves and she leaves him, the camera goes back to that position with the girl in the same place but the man has gone.

Task 3 - Analyse the Artist

She was Mainly recognised when she featured in the hit song 'Somebody that I used to know' by Goyte. After featuring in this song she gained more popularity within the music industry.
Her music genre is pop with a hint of RnB to mix it up and to be a little bit different from most artists. Her musical style has been considered jazz-inspired electropop, and she was influenced by many artists such as Michael Jackson, Minnie Riperton and Stevie wonder. At the age of 10 Kimbra started to write her own Songs. JUst at the age of 12 her father Ken Johnson got her a guitar and she started taking lessons straight away and before she knew it she was on stage singing her own songs whilst playing the guitar and also covering various artists. Her first music video was the song titled "smile" which was for a children's tv show "What Now". She also gained more experience with playing the guitar when she joined the high schools' jazz choir and from there she working and homed her skills, not just for playing her instrument but for her singing.
Her music and style is often referred to other artists such as Florence and the machine, Nina Simone and Bjork.

Understanding copyright

Understanding Copyright
Copyright is when a law that gives the creator of an original piece of work exclusive rights to use it. In other words you cannot copy that particular piece of without seeking permission of the the creator.
For my music video I will have to ask permission from the artist who's song that I am going to use. Copyright stops you from getting credit from the work or in this case the song. It is a very important issue thats need to be taken into consideration and I have to overcome the rules and regulations by getting permission first.
You can do this by doing many different things such as writing to the artist, emailing the artist or using social network sites such as twitter to try and contact the artist. Also if you do not have permission from the artist and you upload your music video to youtube it can be removed from the site.
This is purely because you have not got permission and it would be breaking the law if they did not take action against the video that you would have produced. Here is a image of a video that has been removed from youtube because of the copyright law.Tuesday, 5 March 2013
Task 3 - Understanding the techniques of music videos.
For this task I have edited to the beat of a song. As you will see by the video that I have used different styles and methods to create the music video and make it in time with the beat.
Here is the music video:
What I had to do was create a music video with a collection of different clips, with different things going on in them. For example one clip will have the people in animal costumes break dancing then the next scene will be two of the actors in a car driving along. I had to combine them and edit them to the best of the song to match the tempo and the paste of the beat. Here is a screen shot of one of the shots and the music to it ( The music is the green bar underneath):
To Create this music video I went on to Final Cut express to create the video and I went onto File, Import and folder and from there I selected the folder with all of the clips in and the track that I was going to use which was a song by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five - The message.
The First thing i had to do was drag the track to the time line on the second line, and then lock it so that my music will always be there. Here is a print screen of the button that you click so this will allow you to do it.
Once this is done, it will keep your music there and it will not be effected by anything you do, for example if you you cut out a bit of the music by accident, if the lock is on this will not happen so therefore it is safe. Here is the track in the folder in which the song is in, and a screen shot of the music in place and the lock button in which you click in order to do the above.

The next step I took, was to view the different clips that I had, and to see which clip best matches to that particular part of the song. For the first part of the song I had to find a certain part of a clip and match it to the style of the beat in the beginning. Then i had to use different techniques and effects to make it look like a Music video.
I used many Techniques to make the music video have a bit more of style to it and to make it stand out more than just normal clips being collided together. One of the effects that I used was the split screen effect witch allows me to put more than one clip together at the same time.

To do this first you have to get the a clip which is the same length and place it above the clip that you wish to make it into a split screen. like so. Now on the second screen you will have a grid over the clip and all you will have to so is make it small by dragging the corners.
Here is the music video:

Task 2 (Part 2)
There are many different music video styles such as digital or stop-motion animation.
Digital animation for example is when an artist uses animation for their music video. This can be effective because it is different from most music videos. Here is an example of a artist using animation for their music video:
As you can see when you watch the video that the artist "Gorillaz" use animation in majority of their music and in this song Dirty Harry, you can see that there is animation and the animation represents individual in the band. This is very successful because it had made them very well known.
Stop-motion animation is when the animation is in a jumpy style. There are many examples of this, but the most successful and most popular is Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer. They way they do this is that they move what ever they are filming, film it then pause then move and it is a endless cycle and is done until the motion is complete. Here is the song "sledgehammer":
Also, animation is not just a effective way of making a music video. Lip syncing also also very successful, many different bands and artists have used this Method. Here is music band that have this in their music video that uses this. Temper Trap - Love lost is a video that uses this, and it has became a very successful video.
Here it is below:
Some artists also choose to make their videos to interpretative, narrative, parody or referencing other artists or media. This is a good way because it attracts people to watch their music video. I am going to give you an example of one of these, which will be a music video which is a parody, for example Sid Vicious - My way, which is making fun of frank Sinatra. Here it is, as you can see Sid vicious is imitating Frank Sinatra :
Also one way for a music video to be successful is when an artist uses a homage for their video. These homages can relate and be anything, could be to other styles of music, other artists etc. Here is an example of a homage, from the Band Outkast and the song is hey ya, which gives homage to 50's and 60's live music shows. Here is the video below:

Task 2 - Understand the styles and conventions of music videos
Andrew Goodwin Has identified the following features of music videos:
1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (eg stage performance in metal video, dance routine/girl band).
2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
3. There is a relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).
5. There is frequently reference to the notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
6. There is often intertextual reference (to films, TV programmes, other music videos, etc).
At least one of these six points are used in a music video and Andrew Goodwin has put this into six easy points so you can easily understand why artists uses these. I am also going to explain each point in more detail and give you an example of a music video which uses the points above.
1. Andrew Goodwin has said that each different music genre has different style of music videos, and this is very true because for example metal songs, usually have their live shows as their music video and this is a very good, because but not only does it have the song but it shows the audience that would be watching the video, how good the band is live and it might encourage them to go to see them in concert, therefore promoting and making that certain band more popular. Here is an example of a band that uses live performances as their music video: Here is Pearl Jam and this is the song alive and as you can see it was performed live in front on an audience.
2. There being a relationship between lyrics and visuals means that when the artist is singing the lyrics, the visuals in the music video match the lyrics. This is a good way to make the audience understand what the artist is saying and plus it relates to it better. for example Nelly Fertado - Im like a bird. In this music video you can see birds, and plus in the video she fly's relating to the lyrics that she sings in the song. Here is the video below: gfgfgf
3. There being a relationship between the music and the visuals means that the scene matches the pace and tone of the music, for example if it was a slow, relaxing song the takes will be longer, and if it was a fast beat the takes will be more quicker to match the song. For a fast beat the track Kanye West - All of the lights, as you will be able to seen the beat matches up with what comes up in the music video such as the lyrics and the footage of him and the other artist's singing. Here is the two songs:
4. The record label company of some artists demand a lot of close ups of the artists. This may be because they want to show the audience the artist's emotions in the music video, also to make them seem more glamorous and have them gain popularity in the celebrity industry. In this Girls aloud song, as you can see the way the video is shot is to make them look attractive and a part of a band. gfgfgfgf
5. For the fifth point suggested that theres is frequently reference to the notion of looking. Music videos are often set to look for grabbing peoples attention for example women dressing provocative to grab viewers attention. Also there are references of being watched.Music videos make being voyeur acceptable it allows us to watch things that we possibly couldn't watch in real life for example Rihanna - We found love shows us this:
6. There is often intertextual references in a lot of music videos that bring artists release. This means that in the music video the artist relates the song to a film. This is also a good way of promoting that particular film and song. Also it could gain more popularity depending on what the film is, and who the artist is.

Purpose of a music video
The purpose of a music Videos is to get noticed and to get promotion. Promotion from an advert can be to get noticed and more popularity, it also markets an image and this can lead to many things, such as a bigger income. The main purpose of an music video is an advert and as an advert different music videos can work in different ways. Some music videos they are advertising the song, they are illustrating the song and telling the story. Also some artists and bands use synergy to promote and advertise films, tv programmes. Extension of income
Many music videos give the artist/artist's an extension of income, which means it makes them more money. This can happen from what type of the music video it is, and what happens in it. For example the song Gangnam style by PSV has had the most views ever on youtube with over a billion views. this had made PSV very famous by the views he has.
The reason for this is the way he shot the video, it promoted the song by making it known worldwide. Here is the video below and as you can the video has made it an sensational hit;
Extension of outlets
Depending on how the good and successful the music video is and the song it can lead to many things other than an extension of income this could, be dvd's, CD's sales etc. The more popular the pacific video becomes the more available it will be because many people would wanna listen to the song because of the video so, the main aim of a music video is mainly to promote the song.
Producers Strategies
Many artist's produced their music videos independently. There a lot of artist's that have used this method, and it has been very successful and has many ratings. Artists's such as Ok Go have used this many of times and they have became very popular with their video "Here it goes again".
Independent Music Videos
Many artists create their own music videos. There are many advantages and disadvantages to doing this, because it will either end up a hit or end up as a failure. Also the advantages to this is also a small budget. If you are doing the music video yourself you would not need to hire anyone, such as camera man, producers etc, so it is a clever way to save money, and gain popularity. Here is an example;
Here below is the band "OK Go" and as you can see they have made this music video themselves and it became very popular and therefore became a success.
